A ref. 6350 Explorer featuring pencil hands, a lollipop seconds, and incredible honeycomb Swiss-only dial. The 6350 was the first model to feature the foundational elements of the Explorer as we known them across all examples: Explorer text, 3-6-9 configuration, and chronometer certification all on the dial. In addition, it is the only Explorer reference which offers the charm of the honeycomb dial, a highly desirable trait manufactured only for a few years. This sense of experimentation and restraint, combined with its direct link to establishing one of the most powerful narratives in watchmaking, makes the 6350 one of the most compelling vintage Rolex tool watches created.

Worth Reading

The 6350 Explorer was introduced in 1953, a reference which many would argue constitutes the very first Rolex Explorer. Where various elements had appeared intermittently in the 6150 & prior evolution, the 6350 was the first to—across all examples made—incorporate ‘Explorer’ text, a 3-6-9 configuration, and chronometer certification all on the dial. The prior 6150 was not a chronometer and would only occasionally feature Explorer text. The foundation of the Explorer as we know it (Explorer text, 3-6-9, and chronometer) began here. The 6350 is also the only Explorer reference to feature that most desirable trait in Explorer collecting: a honeycomb dial.

Rolex officially patented the Explorer name early in 1953, but only began using the name in serial production after the ascent of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay on Everest in May 1953. The 6350 was the reference which began the Explorer model line in earnest. The Explorer was produced largely with a flat gloss gilt dial, in fact many 6350 featured this dial as well. This example features a diamond-like, slightly more matte engraved texture dial known as ‘honeycomb’ or ‘waffle’ to collectors. Signed Swiss alone with chapter ring in radium, these are some of the most attractive and highly collected early sport Rolex dials. Additionally, this 1953 (955XXX) example features early pencil hands with a lollipop seconds. This dream configuration of desirable traits is a package that only the ref. 6350 offers.

The 6350 embodies the commercial crystallization of Rolex’s mountaineering story (and it is indeed a well-told story). The 6150 & 6350 are less understood and seen when compared to later models, even the 6610 but particularly the 1016. Yet, it is within this brief snapshot in time that the story and design of the Explorer was formed. With charming nuances like the honeycomb texture, lollipop seconds, and pencil hands, the is arguably the most handsome Explorer reference ever produced. This sense of experimentation and restraint, combined with its direct link to establishing one of the most powerful narratives in watchmaking, makes the 6350 one of the most compelling vintage Rolex tool watches created.

Condition

This 6350 presents in exceptional overall condition. The dial bears a very light patina, with deep orange radium applications. All gilt text including the chapter ring is still well defined and clear. Dust is minimal. Its gilt hands bears light weathering at extremities. The lollipop seconds and all hand radium application is present and consistent. The case (955XXX) is well-preserved with defined lugs, a sharp bezel edge, and defined inner lug junctions. Its calibre A296 is running well on our timing equipment. It comes on a 6636 stretch rivet Oyster dating to 1955 with 64 end links.
