An Octa Réserve de Marche hailing from 2003, featuring both a brass movement and 38mm case. The Réserve de Marche spearheaded the creation of FP Journe as a brand with collections, not just two watches. Brass movements were made only from 1999 to 2004 in fewer than 2,000 watches across all lines before the transition to pink gold movements. Of the Octa Réserve de Marche specifically, estimates place brass-movement production between 459 and 530 examples in total. It is the founding cornerstone of the brand as a complete collection, from the years when the workshop was anything but an industrial concern.

Worth Reading

Hailing from the earliest years of FP Journe, this Octa Réserve de Marche is 38mm with a brass movement. In 2001, just two years after founding his manufacture, François-Paul Journe unveiled the Octa—his third creation after the Tourbillon Souverain and Chronomètre à Résonance, and his first automatic. The Réserve de Marche spearheaded the creation of a collection, not just two watches. This example dates to 2003, in the 38mm case François-Paul himself preferred, housing the rhodium-plated brass calibre that defines the manufacture's earliest chapter.

Calibre 1300 within is a thesis against modular watchmaking. Rather than stack complications atop a base movement, François-Paul designed one integrated architecture—30mm across yet just 5.5mm tall—engineered from the outset to accept everything from a simple date to an annual calendar without gaining a millimetre. It is why the movement fills the caseback so completely, and why the Octa remained a wearable dress watch no matter the complication. The specification reads like chronometer work. A full 120 hours of chronometric power reserve from one extraordinarily long mainspring, delivering 850 grams of torque with just 25% amplitude loss at the reserve's end. A free-sprung 10.1mm balance with adjustable inertia weights beats at 21,600vph. The 22k gold guilloché rotor winds unidirectionally, sitting slightly off-centre by design. Look closely at the anglage: the file marks are left deliberately intact, François-Paul's insistence that human hands remain visible in the finish.

The dial emphasizes negative space with frosted white gold, featured exposed screws and separated displays. The power reserve here displays actual autonomy remaining—later Journes inverted the scale to read time elapsed since winding. And when the Octa turned twenty in 2021, the manufacture's 99-piece anniversary edition returned to brass in tribute to watches exactly like this one. The original needs no tribute; it is the cornerstone itself, in the size and metal its maker intended.

Condition

This Octa Réserve de Marche presents in excellent overall condition. The white gold dial features extremely light signs of patina and even, mild oxidation. Its case is strong with no signs of intervention and light surface wear throughly. The calibre 1300 is running well in specification on our timing equipment. It comes with box, warranty card, and service receipt from 2021
