A ref. 6239 Daytona with uncommon ‘Cherry’ dial, so named for the tone of the red Daytona text above the 6 o’clock subregister. The 6239 marked the birth of the Daytona in 1963, bringing the tachymeter track outside the dial to its steel bezel. Numerous dial variants were offered within the reference including ‘Cherry’ dials, the first use of red Daytona text. That aesthetic was passed down through the 6263/5 ‘Big Red’ Daytona, ultimately becoming almost archetypal for modern Daytona.

Worth Reading

The 6239 was the first ever Daytona reference, bringing numerous design features now common to the model. Various dial configurations were offered throughout its production from 1963-69. Despite its pump pushers and steel bezel the aesthetic is immediately recognizable. ‘Cherry’ dials are a rare variant that has become highly sought after due to its striking appearance; the first use of the red Daytona text now common in modern examples.

Initially called the ‘Le Mans’, the 6239 marked the birth of the Daytona in 1963. It is a watch of firsts. It was the first Rolex to move the tachymeter scale from the dial to its steel bezel and to use Cosmograph rather than Chronograph, features widely accepted as the delineation between pre-Daytona and Daytona. Previously Rolex chronograph dials were monotone, consistent in color between dial and subdials. The 6239 brought the first use of the contrasting ‘Panda’ dial color scheme. The reference can be found in a number of dial configurations from Double Swiss Underline absent Daytona branding, exotic or Paul Newman, big and small Daytona, to the exceptionally rare blue and ‘Cherry’ dials.

The ‘Cherry’ dial gets its name from the light-red color of the Daytona print above the 6 o’clock subregister. While Red Daytona text was also featured on Paul Newman dials, here the effect is more subtle, a singular burst of color against an otherwise monochromatic dial. Though relatively understated, it will immediately stand out to the trained eye. The aesthetic was passed down to the now highly collectible 6263/5 ‘Big Red’ with its slightly brighter shade of red.Today red Daytona text is standard, but in 6239 examples it is uncommon.

The 6239 comes from a time when experimentation in dial variations within a reference was common for Rolex. Some of those variations marked changes in materials and production methods while others were purely aesthetic. The striking visual appeal of red Daytona text has been so successful that its use has become practically archetypal for modern Daytona. The ‘Cherry’ dial, much like the 6239 was fittingly the first.
