A ref. 15202BC, a rare variant of the ‘Jumbo’ Royal Oak. One of just two pink dial ‘Jumbo’ references, its pink gold dial highlights the petite tapisserie pattern that found its return to standard production within the reference. Though its pairing of pink dial with white gold case is unique to ‘Jumbo’ Royal Oak, it remains remarkably true to the original 5402 in its proportions and dial design. It is the last Royal Oak to utilize the calibre 2121 at the heart of all previous ‘Jumbo’ models, proudly displaying the movement through the display caseback. Limited to just 75 examples per year during production from 2019 - 2021, the 15202BC is one of the rarest and most collectable variants of the reference.

Worth Reading

The 15202BC is a rare variant of the prolific ‘Jumbo’ Royal Oak. One of just two pink dial ‘Jumbo’ references, its pink gold dial highlights the petite tapisserie pattern that found its return to standard production within the reference. The watch references the 14802 'salmon' though here executed in white gold. While its pairing of pink dial with white gold case is unique to ‘Jumbo’ Royal Oak, it remains remarkably true to the original 5402 in its proportions and dial design. It is the last Royal Oak to utilize the calibre 2121 at the heart of all previous ‘Jumbo’ models, proudly displaying it through the display caseback. Limited to just 75 examples per year during production from 2019 - 2021, the 15202BC is one of the rarest and most collectable variants of the reference.

The 15202 launched in 2000, bringing the 39mm ‘Jumbo’ Royal Oak back into standard production for the first time since the discontinuation of the original 5402. While Audemars Piguet had experimented with 39mm variants in limited runs, the 14802 (limited edition of 1000 examples) and the transitional 15002 were not intended as cornerstones of the lineup. Its aesthetics remained clearly linked to the 5402 in more than proportions. Dial elements are all clearly inspired by the original, though the Tapisserie dial motif in pre-2012 examples is grande rather than petite – a less intricate variation of the engraved hobnail matrix. However, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the model in 2012, Audemars Piguet re-released the 15202 in an ‘Anniversary Edition’ with AP down logo configuration and in-house petite tapisserie dial, bringing it closer in spirit and aesthetic to that of the original reference, though prior to 2012 petite tapisserie dials were manufactured by Stern Freres. While still considered ultra-thin, the 8.1mm thick 15202 sacrificed some thinness to provide a display caseback. The skeletonized 22k pink gold rotor and beautiful finishing of the automatic calibre 2121 are now visible. The 2121 is a movement at the heart of Audemars Piguet history, at just 3.05mm it held the record for thinnest central rotor movement with date for years and was used in numerous ultra-thin watches including the 5402 and later 14802. Originally made from Jaeger-LeCoultre ebauchés, Audemars Piguet switched to fully in-house production of the calibre at the turn of the century.

This 15202BC is a limited production white gold variant with pink dial. Audemars Piguet only manufactured 75 per year from the years of 2019-2021 resulting in a total production of 225 examples. It is one of only two pink dial ‘Jumbo’ references, though calling it ‘Salmon’ will spark controversy. Audemars Piguet named the color ‘Pink Gold’, the shade a touch warmer than the salmon dial on the limited edition 14802. The dial features a petite tapisserie pattern with white gold hands and markers to match the case. The 15202BC has presence both physically and visually. Though similar in aesthetics to the steel roots of the model, the weight of the precious metal immediately distinguishes itself. The pairing of the pale white gold with warm pink gold dial creates captivating visual contrast.

The 15202 in many ways is representative of the transitional period within Audemars Piguet at the turn of the century, maintaining aspects of the heritage that have shaped the brand and the Royal Oak line while bringing production fully in-house. The display caseback feels all the more appropriate as it is the last of the ‘Jumbo’ Royal Oaks to feature the 2121 calibre used within the 5402, though now fully produced in-house.. While the reference brought the return of petite tapisserie, dials were no longer outsourced. The limited production of the 15202BC makes it one of the most rare and collected configurations of the reference. It is a worthy celebration of the Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’, emphasizing the return to petite tapisserie with its dramatic dial tone and precious metal case.
