404.032, Double Split, Pink Gold

A ref. 404.032, a world-first chronograph which splits not only seconds but minutes. Debuting in 2004, the Double Split sent shockwaves and pushed technical boundaries beyond the Swiss. This was an immense technical challenge, never before attempted. The resulting calibre L001.1 required 465 hand-finished components, arranged in three layers with its famous 'two towers' for rattrapante function. With all the weight, solidity, and engineer of that Mercedes door Blümlein intended, it is an uber-Lange from the early years of the manufacture.

Worth Reading

A first only happens once. Such was the case with the 2004 debut of this ref. 404.032 Double Split, a world-first chronograph which splits not only seconds but minutes through overlapping hands in the minute totalizer as well. Effectively, it is a dual rattrapante. This meaningful innovation shocked Switzerland and set the course for Lange’s technical ambition in the decades that would follow, building on the Datograph with untraditional and immensely challenging complication. Groundbreaking and imposing, this is one of the world’s great chronographs (and caseback experiences).

Calibre L001.1 builds significantly on the foundation the Datograph laid. It is a mechanical sculpture where pure purpose has created something which mirrors art. It comprises a base layer with standard gear train, secondary layer with traditional chronograph functions, and third (topmost) layer with the double rattrapante works visible externally. Its lovingly-termed ‘two towers’ both drive the double rattrapante, engaged by two column wheels and a plethora of artfully sculpted lever arms whose full workings are beyond the scope of this listing. Many of the 465 components of this calibre had never been made before, requiring manufacturing tolerances that were unthinkable prior. L001.1 also debuted Lange’s first-ever in-house made hairspring, though the complex works of the third layer obscure it. And we’re not complaining. Despite the component count, the finishing standard remains perfectly Glashütte standard, incorporating hand engraving, Glashütte stripes, anglage, black polish, blued screws, and chatons. This is not to mention the feel of engagement, which is marvelous.

The aesthetics of the Double Split focus on imposing restraint. The dial is a three-layer construction of argenté-tone German silver, mirroring the depth of the movement. Its subdials are considerably larger to help balance out the larger dial real estate. The hands are gently curved, yet with the exceptional craftsmanship here their tolerances are so close that, when stacked, the split hands simply disappear into one. Interplay of blued steel and gold creates visual contrast once the split is engaged. Roman numerals have been ditched in favor of clear faceted indices, leading toward a minimalist impression by contrast. Its three-body case flaunts sporting soldered lugs. On this pink gold execution, the case is fully mirrored without brushing. This effectively smooths over the sporting shape to create a more formal air. The caseback engravings are all hand engraved and hammered, remarkably beautiful in their own right.

The Double Split was a remarkable achievement hard-won, a watch solely focused on pushing technical boundaries at any cost. The result is one of the most breathtakingly deep caseback experiences that exists, with twice the visual drama of a traditionally high complication, the standard rattrapante. History will not forget the Double Split, which was a rather significant landmark for putting Glashütte on the radar for those who seek mechanical lust over proportions. With all the weight, solidity, and engineer of that Mercedes door Blümlein intended via analogy, it is an uber-Lange from the early years of the manufacture.

Condition

This 404.032 presents in exceptional condition. The case bears only very light signs of wear, nothing more than extremely faint hairlines. Its dial shows no signs of service or any damage. Its calibre L001.1 is operating perfectly and running well in specification on our timing equipment.
