Brass FP Journe Octa Réserve de Marche

Brass FP Journe Octa Réserve de Marche

In FP Journe, two things are hyper-in-demand at the moment. One is anything made from the brass era. The second is 38mm. This Réserve de Marche (RdM) has both. The Réserve de Marche occupies a special area in the early history of François‑Paul Journe’s manufacture. Introduced in 2001, it was the third wristwatch movement developed after the Tourbillon (1999) and Résonance (2000). More importantly, it was Journe’s first automatic wristwatch and the start of a true catalogue & collection in place of souscription and complication. Designed during the fledgling years of the brand—the RdM embodied Journe’s ambition to create a practical daily watch without sacrificing the chronometric philosophy that defined his work. And the stripes are straight as well, as if it weren’t attractive enough.

The Octa project centered on a radical idea: an automatic ébauche whose dimensions would remain constant across future complications allowing consistent case design and thin proportions. Calibre 1300 was engineered such that additional mechanisms—i.e. annual calendar or chronograph—could be integrated without enlarging the movement. This foresight allowed the Octa line to expand while maintaining identical case proportions. In its earliest execution, the movement was constructed from rhodium-plated brass, part of what collectors now call Journe’s “Brass Era.” Between 1999 and 2004 fewer than 2,000 brass-movement watches were produced across all models before the manufacture transitioned to solid gold movements. And they’re really starting to separate in values today.

The Octa Réserve de Marche itself was produced in 38mm during this early period from 2001 to roughly 2003/2004, typically in platinum or rose gold cases. Research suggests approximately 459–530 examples were made with brass movements, making them among the rarest early Octas. Several details distinguish the earliest brass pieces. The first batch featured straight Côtes de Genève finishing—later replaced by rounded stripes—and it is believed roughly 110 of these earliest movements exist.

Today, the 38mm brass Octa Réserve de Marche represents the spirit of Journe’s formative years: small production, intensely personal engineering, and a design language that would define slightly-French independent watchmaking for decades.

This example comes with the full kit, as well as additional paperwork noting service in 2023, from the auction upstart Marteau & Co, as part of their currently live sale.
