116.032, Lange 1 Time Zone, Pink Gold

The Lange 1, one of the four initial references released at A. Lange & Söhne’s rebirth in 1994, is a pillar of the brand's foundation. Its asymmetric but geometrically defined dial design is in itself an embodiment of the teutonic principles that have guided the brand since. As such, numerous variations have been launched building on the success of the original reference, offering distinct utility and complications to the fundamental architecture. The Lange 1 Time Zone, a two time zone display variant, is the 3rd complicated Lange 1 to be released following a Tourbillon in 1999 and a moonphase range. 

Given familiarity with the Lange 1, it is easiest to speak of the Time Zone in relative terms. Dial geometry is for the most part unchanged, the isosceles triangle layout remains but a day/night indicator has been added for each display. The small seconds subdial has moved to the 6 o’clock position on the main display to allow a second time zone display to utilize the available real estate. The case has grown to 41.9 mm to accommodate a city disk with 24 cities, each representative of a time zone, around the dial’s perimeter. Numerous editions have been created to allow the owner to customize the cities present. Depression of the additional pusher advances both this city disk, as well as the hour hand of the second time display. While the second time zone and city disk may appear to be a trivial addition, the complication requires a 417-component calibre. As expected from the manufacturer, immaculate finishing of the calibre  L031.1 is visible through the open caseback. 

In 2020 a refresh of the Time Zone was released, offering an updated movement, refined dial design, as well as additional case materials and dial colors. In an effort to increase usability, day/night indicator locations were adjusted to be concentric with their respective display and a daylight savings time indicator was added. It is important to note this is not merely a world time but dual time zone display with the second zone displayed where one might expect to find running seconds on a standard Lange 1. It is extremely functional and legible despite 9 hands.  

The Lange 1 Time Zone is a more sporting variant of a classic. It is incredibly successful in offering additional functionality without compromising those aspects which made the Lange 1 beloved. The additional time display feels in balance with the beautifully calculated dial, passed down from the Lange 1. While proportions have increased, greater curvature on the lugs offers a satisfying and comfortable wearing experience. As such, the Time Zone is a thoughtful and usable addition to the Lange 1 range that both respects and builds upon the original's successes.

This 116.032 presents in great overall condition. The case is full and sharp, including deep hallmarks. There is superficial surface wear throughout, commensurate with sparing use. The bezel has some light scratches visible in harsh light. The dial has no visible damage. The calibre L031.1 is running well in specification on our timing equipment.
