Tissot 6916 Chevron Dial
In the Mad Men era of pie-pan Constellations, UG Monodates, and waffle Princes, value alternatives existed alongside these heavyweights. Tissot may be largely famed today for quartz consumables and bright orange adolescent designs, but it wasn’t always so. Seeming acknowledging their sinful modernity, Tissot have released one or two throwbacks to their unimpeachably great back catalogue. This isn’t that. This is the genuine article, in an obscure Calatrava flavor.
I have for some time lusted after a steal monopusher 33.3 Tissot from the 1930s. The same goes for the 1940s black dial Aquasport. This evening however, while on the hunt for this round of finds, I found an equally attractive vintage offering I hadn’t seen till date. Now, I may add a 6916 with guilloché to that illustrious company. This Calatrava offers a squared off chevron style dial, with radium-hugging arrowhead indices. Hot. The signature vintage Tissot script is emblazoned below an Arabic 12, contrasted to an opposing 6. The design is quite modern for a mid 50s take, and every bit unique compared to the period. The 35mm steel case is housing an automatic 28.5R-21 calibre.
This example sports a strong dial. Radium has not disintegrated and the dial is not corroded. No rusting or water damage is visible. The case and crystal sport the kind of wear you would expect to be associated with a sixty-five year old value-alternative. That said, the movement seems to be clear of cancer and running well. There is no service history but the watch is said to be keeping good time. It comes from a private collector.
