101.035, ‘Darth’ Lange 1, Platinum

Sold

A ref. 101.035 ‘Darth’ Lange 1. The Darth began production in 1999 but stopped in 2006, widely speculated as part of a broader strategy to reserve the all-black, platinum aesthetic for rare and special projects (as it began prior to the Darth). The Darth is one of the more collected and rarer early 2000s references. It has become a modern classic in just a few short decades, for both its significance to A. Lange & Söhne’s heritage and the imposing, monochromatic, monolithic presence it casts.

Worth Reading

The ref. 101.035 'Darth' is one of the most successful references from the brand's earlier years, emblematic of Glashütte watchmaking in every way. Penned by a team of Blümlein, Meis, and Klaus, it is imposing. It was the first standard production Lange reference to be produced with an all-black dial (including date discs, rather unusually) in platinum. In production from 1999 until 2006, it was not a part of the initial launch. But the aesthetic draw from a piece unique PLM Tourbillon and came to define many of Lange’s more specialist releases since.

The Darth’s significance extends beyond aesthetics. Its creation can be traced to the formative years of the reborn A. Lange & Söhne, when figures such as Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein were establishing a modern design language for the brand. The watch represents the convergence of several important earlier references: the platinum Lange 1 ‘Stealth’ (101.005/101.025), the rare steel black-dial Lange 1 ref. 101.026, and the unique black-dial platinum Tourbillon Pour le Mérite of 1996. The resulting watch was simultaneously conservative and radical—retaining the signature Lange 1 architecture while presenting it in an almost architectural palette. Featured alongside the platinum silver-dial ‘Stealth’ in period catalogues, the Darth formed a deliberate visual counterpart, illustrating the growing confidence of Lange’s design team as the manufacture entered the 21st century.

Mechanically, the Darth is powered by the original caliber L901.0, one of the most important movements in modern German watchmaking. While unmistakably Lange in its execution—with untreated German silver plates, screwed gold chatons, hand-engraved balance cock, and three-quarter plate construction—the movement’s origins are tied to a gear-train architecture derived from the Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 822 ébauche. This relationship has sometimes been misunderstood; the L901.0 is not simply a rebadged JLC movement but rather a heavily re-engineered caliber that provided the technical foundation upon which Lange built its own identity during the revival years.

The market’s perception of the Darth has evolved dramatically since its discontinuation. At the end of production in 2006, the reference retailed for roughly €27,000 or $31,800. For years it remained appreciated mainly by dedicated Lange collectors, but as scholarship surrounding early Lange references expanded, the Darth emerged as one of the defining watches of the brand’s renaissance era. Today the 101.035 is widely regarded as a modern classic, prized not only for its rarity and striking appearance but also for representing the final chapter of the original L901.0-powered Lange 1 generation. What was once merely the “black dial Lange 1” has become a touchstone reference, linking the ambitious experimentation of the 1990s with the highly curated collecting culture that surrounds A. Lange & Söhne today.

Condition

This 101.035 exhibits light signs of wear with no significant concerns. The mirror finished bezel and lug upper has a light patina, with small signs of wear as photographed. There is a very small mark to note near 5:30 on the bezel outer, pictured. Its dial is excellent with no damage. The calibre L901.0 is running well in spec on our timing equipment. It comes on the pictured tan calfskin strap with its platinum buckle and full set.
