Urban Jürgensen Reference 8

Urban Jürgensen Reference 8

When most of the industry scrambled to fit quartz movements into their collections, Peter Baumberger correctly read the quartz crisis as a passing phase and an opportunity. He slowly purchased the rights to the Urban Jürgensen & Sønner name along with machinery the industry had written off as obsolete, partnering with English watchmaker Derek Pratt to relaunch the Danish house as a bastion of traditional watchmaking. Out of that Baumberger-Pratt era, the most desired period of the brand's wristwatch production, came the Reference 8: produced from 1999 to 2008, it was the firm's first non-limited production wristwatch and, at nearly ten years, its core reference.

Photography of this Ref 8 comes via a prior sale by A Collected Man, example in market linked below.

Roughly 700 examples were made, all in precious metal—platinum plus yellow, pink, and white golds. UJ never published a per-metal breakdown; yellow gold appears most frequently, while platinum and white gold surface far less often. A handful of steel limited editions exist outside standard production, including an example numbered 01 sold at Phillips. Every configuration—time-only or date, solid or the reference's first-ever optional display caseback—used a Frédéric Piguet ébauche: first the FP 1150, later the FP 1160 with a faster beat and 72-hour reserve, finished with an engraved 21k gold barleycorn rotor.

The people are the story in UJ. Pratt hand-turned the guilloché dials himself on those rescued and antiquated rose engines, in contrasting patterns on solid silver. The bi-metal 'observatoire' hands took a full day each: a yellow gold ring machined independently, then pressed into a frame on the purple/blued-steel hour hand. Phillips credits the era's technical supervision to Pratt alongside Kari Voutilainen, who would carry the house style forward until today. The 37mm, 8.5mm-thin case from Centrale Boîtes carried teardrop lugs soldered on invisibly, using mid-century methods.

The market has caught on to this high point in UJ history. The romance of this ragtag Skunkworks group giving the middle finger to the quartz crisis resonates with many. In addition, there just aren’t that many opportunities to see Derek Pratt’s work, gone far too early. The closest thing the Baumberger-Pratt era had to a core model is now prized precisely for its restraint.

This example presents in excellent condition with a strong case and no signs of any marks on dial. It comes without box or papers from a Genevan-based retailer.
