46003 Vacheron Constantin 222

46003 Vacheron Constantin 222

Few watches encapsulate the 1970s luxury sports movement like the Vacheron Constantin 222, launched in 1977 to mark the maison's 222nd anniversary. While Gérald Genta drew the Royal Oak and Nautilus, the 222 came from a young Jorg Hysek. The range spanned the 37mm 'Jumbo' ref. 44018, this 34mm midsize ref. 46003, a 31mm square ref. 46004, and a 25mm quartz. Production ran until 1984, when the rectangular-ish 333 took over. Vacheron's records indicate roughly 1,000 midsize examples across all metals—steel, two-tone, yellow gold, and rare white gold—against about 700 Jumbos, with full gold examples only a small fraction of that thousand.

The midsize is no consolation prize. Its monobloc case keeps the Jumbo's slim 7mm profile, its 120m water resistance, the gold Maltese cross at 5 o'clock, and the screw-down serrated bezel—the only route into the movement, demanding a dedicated tool. With a long lug-to-lug, it wears more like a Day-Date than its diameter suggests. It arguably got the more visual engine too: where the Jumbo runs the time-only caliber 1121 (JLC 920 base), the 46003 uses caliber 1124, Vacheron's take on Jaeger-LeCoultre's 889, adding central seconds and a date. It carries 33 jewels, adjustment to five positions, and a rotor riding an unlubricated ceramic ball bearing with a 21k gold segment.

Gold cases are most often this gold-tone champagne, but silver, black, and white exist in the midsize case in different metals. Some have been moved around. But this dial is well documented for gold. Very rare, you may even see the occasional Roman dial in the midsized case. Signatures vary marginally from the full-sized 44018 in a sigma-flanked 'Swiss' at 6 o'clock where the Jumbo is 'Swiss' only. The one exception is the diamond set midsized which has a Swiss alone.

The hexagonal-link integrated bracelet came from Gay Frères, about as storied as they come, closing with a double-blade—whose safety catch bears a Maltese cross. For trivia: the original Jumbo full set included a matching serrated money clip so rare that only a few auction listings have ever pictured one. The midsized 222 is an incredibly nuanced value today, one all too often overlooked.

This example currently in market looks fairly strong overall. It boasts its original papers and a recent service by VC. The tritium applications are quite bright, but look to be matching and that can happen. The case is strong enough, where many are surprisingly rough this is an above the average example and priced fairly.
