A ref. 310.021, Langematik Perpetual Calendar, A Lange & Söhne's first of the traditionally Swiss-dominated complication. This yellow gold example is from early in the model's production. The brand's ground up movement design and first principles thinking allowed a novel display arranged to prioritize the most commonly referenced information. The 478 component automatic calibre L922.1 features traditional Glashütte finishing, and the ever pleasing zero reset complication. The Langematik Perpetual was both a massive technical step forward for A Lange & Söhne as well as proof that the Teutonic principles at the heart of the brand could result in unique and successful interpretations of traditional watchmaking.

Worth Reading

The Langematik Perpetual Calendar is Lange’s first of the traditionally Swiss-dominated complication. This yellow gold example is from early in the model’s production as evidenced by the rectangular corrector pusher on the case’s exterior. The Langematik Perpetual was both a massive technical step forward for A Lange & Söhne as well as proof that the Teutonic principles at the heart of the brand could result in unique and successful interpretations of traditional watchmaking.

The initial Lange releases aimed to establish a German watchmaking style as separate from the Swiss houses through design language and technical prowess. In this, Lange was highly successful, their Lange 1 brought geometrically defined beauty that would become a pillar of brand while the Tourbillon Pour Le Mérite was a masterclass in innovation and handcraft. Slowly, Lange turned their attention toward expanding complications using ground up movement designs, building upon the pillars that were solidified in the 1994 re-launch. After producing their first automatic calibre in 1997 and their first chronograph in 1999, the Langematik and the Datograph respectively, their sights fell on a complication whose pedigree had been absolutely defined by the Swiss, the perpetual calendar.

Released in 2001 within the Langematik Perpetual, Lange’s take on the perpetual calendar sent shockwaves. In wonderfully German character function was the driving factor. The display is arranged to prioritize the most commonly referenced information. Lange’s grande date window at 12 feels as if it was born for this watch. The dial is highly legible with a railway minute track and luminous plots just outside each Roman numeral. The Langematik enjoyed a long production run across the standard case metals, in 38.5mm, until removal from their catalog in 2024. Early examples such as this can be identified by a single rectangular corrector pusher used for advancing all indications by one increment, this was modified to a recessed pusher in 2006 to prevent accidental actuation.

Its Calibre L922.1 built upon the L921.2 ‘Sax-O-Mat’, Lange’s first automatic calibre designed by Helmut Geyer in his free time. It therefore features the same hand-engraved 18k gold rotor with platinum rim, beautiful perlage and striping, and the ever pleasing zero reset complication which jumps the seconds back to zero upon pulling out the crown. This complex combination of functions contributes to a substantial component count of 478. Traditional Glashütte finishing technique remains, with broad striping, base pelage, a hand-engraved balance cock, and blued screws.

At the time of its release, the perpetual calendar wristwatch’s 75 year-lifespan had seemingly evolved to a natural conclusion. Lange’s novel movement development and strict adherence to functional design principles allowed them to completely break the mold. Lange had already made a name for themselves in the late 1990s as masterful watchmakers through the development of innovative complications in their own style. The Langematik Perpetual demonstrated an ability to approach traditional complications with first-principles thinking, to see beyond a perfectly functional Swiss design to the way things should be. This willingness to think anew has defined Lange's approach to complication since.

Condition

This 310.021 presents in great overall condition. The case is full and sharp, including deep hallmarks. There is some superficial surface wear on the case, commensurate with light and careful use. The bezel has some light scratches, only visible in harsh light. The dial has no visible damage. The calibre L922.1 is running well in specification on our timing equipment.
