Breitling-Superocean-2005

Breitling SuperOcean 2005, Beauty in the Details

The SuperOcean reference 2005 is a diver decidedly unlike any other. First, there’s the ‘slow’ minute-step chronograph to measure time elapsed underwater. Second, there’s the fact that the chronograph hand is effectively spatula-shaped with a rotund lume plot. Third, Breitling included an indicator above 6 on the dial to mark when the chronograph is running (as it moves so slowly). Lastly, there’s the introduction of the SuperOcean signature stylized font—which is possibly the best looking bit of dial text ever created.

There is something truly enigmatic about the unique, focused SuperOcean design. There are no frills: just high legibility, a 600ft water resistance, and abounding charm. You will not find many a dive chronograph with a running indicator complication. Even the size still seems modern today at a then-massive 42mm. There’s nothing not to love.

The same can be said of this example. It is unpolished with intact lume and a pure white chapter. There is a light patina to the bezel but the case is near-as-damnit-new. The seller has inspected its lume under UV and it appears some sections have been refinished. This is the case if you look closely at the minute hand. It’s not as if you can source replacements through Breitling today, so keep that in mind. Nonetheless, its still a strong example and priced fairly.
