Lapis Lazuli Jaeger Lecoultre Memovox
You will be aware, no doubt, of the legendary Memovox. Perhaps second only to the Reverso, the Memovox (shorthand for ‘the voice of memory’) is one of JLC’s most famed pieces. While the E855 reference is still fairly common, this particular E855 is not. The lion’s share of these references are overwhelmingly black and silvered dials. I normally balk when sellers say there are ‘a handful’ of a certain watch. Here, there are actually just a handful remaining.
Total numbers of Lapis Lazuli dials have been estimated from the single digits to very low double digits. There are certainly no more than 10-15 examples. Moreover, the condition of this one is exceptional. The ‘blue scale’ texture is almost wholly unaltered from new. I see light and very mild patina in certain areas but nothing like others I’ve come across. It’s truly special. The Memovox is a very unpretentious but seriously heavy hitting wristwatch. The alarm complication, understated 37mm size, and domed Plexi crystal make a truly classic dress-casual piece. This watch would be a keeper even with a standard black dial. With its one-of-ten-ish deep Lapis Lazuli blue, this Memovox is serious contender for a perfect one watch collection.
The example presented by Mr Watchley today is a great one. The case is unpolished and hardly marked. Its dial is, as stated, the best I’ve ever seen. I’d like to see the movement but I can’t imagine anything is out of place. Watchley is a well-known and respected retailer. Moreover, this Memo comes with a box and original papers unsigned. This JLC is kind the chance you get once to own a perfect example of very scarce reference—a reference so good I could wear every day of my life and want not.
