Rolex made over 200 modifications to the Zenith ‘El Primero’ base to create its calibre 4030. Its dial features a unique combination of arabic numerals and ‘Inverted Six’ lower subregister, a pre-production proof of concept from Rolex’s dial manufacturer through the late 1990’s when higher emphasis was placed on in-house manufacturing. The layout never entered standard production within the steel 16520 and would not be seen again until the precious metal references, leading to a highly rare configuration. The 16520 was aimed to capture the renewed interest in mechanical watchmaking after the end of the quartz crisis.
