The Original Omega Speedmaster Snoopy: 3578.51.00

After just featuring the famous albino Silver Snoopy, a lovely and reasonable example of its older generation just surfaced. I feel fate has decided I should talk a lot about NASA this week. Although the more unique and valuable SIlver Snoopy tends to attract the braggadocios, this nuanced 3578.51.00 is the daddy in every respect of the noun.

The subdial may seem comical to the uninitiated, but if you don’t know the story I’ll refer you to last week’s post. Its case back features a larger rendition of the subdial with ‘Eyes on the Stars’ emblazoned in gold. The watch and its somewhat standard moonwatch/cal 861 design may take some warming to, but once you appreciate its significance the run to attraction is very short.

This example I’m featuring for a few reasons. First, it is very reasonably priced. Secondly it is unpolished and only appears to be lightly worn. It comes with original box and papers. One should be extremely careful in acquiring a 3578.51.00. Many of them are a series of spare moonwatch parts with a printed dial. Provenance, a respectable dealer, and in-person loupe examinations are necessities here. If you’re will to put in the work, this watch is worth the effort.
