If you’ve been paying close attention, legendary horological leader and all around good-guy Eric Wind has been slowly ramping up a public-facing inventory over the last few weeks. While undoubtedly one of the world’s preeminent watch dealers of the last decade, most of his sales have previously been amongst friends in the background. Recently, this seems to be changing. A cursory browse of his website, Wind Vintage, will tell you that inventory is accumulating. What’s more, it is the kind of inventory one would expect from someone who has made his life’s work horology . . .that is to say nuanced and damn cool.

John Mayer, a man famous for his appearances on Hodinkee’s talking watches and not at all for that music thing he does with guitars, contributed to a charitable event in 2011 for Matt’s Promise. In additional to performing, he collaborated with AP to create a customized Offshore that would auctioned after his performance with it on the wrist. The watch hammered in 2011 for 56K USD. All those proceeds went toward research on muscular dystrophy. If that’s not a superhero-watch origin story, I don’t know what is. The piece has bee confirmed to be the same of that origin. It comes with a letter from Matt’s Promise, serial number confirming with AP’s archives that the watch is the same created for that event, and if I am not mistaken something of a unique case back. The Offshore is, undoubtedly, a controversial model. That said, for me, a large part of the non-mechanical/design appeal in watches are for the stories, people, and how we interact with them. The appeal is self-evident.

I’m not sure I even need to comment on condition. It was John Mayer’s. It’s a modern watch. It has its set, the provenance, and it comes from the most trusted guy in vintage. Moreover, the ask is not even unreasonable in the slightest.

Find this Volcano RO Offshore here from Wind Vintage for 39000 USD.
